About Pattachitra
Pattachitra (from Sanskrit: patta meaning cloth and chitra meaning picture) is a cloth-based scroll painting rooted in the artistic traditions of Odisha and West Bengal. Among the oldest surviving art forms in India, Pattachitra has been practiced in the village of Raghurajpur near Puri for over a thousand years.
Traditionally created by the Chitrakara community, these paintings use natural pigments derived from stones, flowers, and conch shells. The cloth is first treated with chalk and gum to create a stiff, smooth surface. Artists then paint intricate scenes from the lives of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra, and the mythological narratives of Odisha — each line drawn freehand with a fine brush made from mongoose hair.
Pattachitra was granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Government of India, recognizing its unique cultural heritage. Our Creative Corner is proud to showcase and promote this sacred art form to a global audience.
